These are pictures from a trip taken in February of 2006 to the islands Puerto Rico, to explore the old city area of San Juan, and to the islands of St Thomas and St Martin in the Western Caribbean area. This first set of pictures were taken in San Juan, mostly in the old city area, though some show the newer city as seen from the cruise ship we were on. As we wandered around the old city area it reminded me of many of the European cities I have visited and really brought home just how strong the Spanish influence is in this part of the world. As Jeanne and wondered the city though the narrow streets, lined with all the blighted painted houses with their abundant balconies, we could easily imagine ourselves in Europe or perhaps even New Orleans, with it strong French, old world charm.
